About this project

Fair Screening is a free and open source application that was designed and developed by Tobias Franklin, as part of a fellowship project with the ABA Center for Innovation. The application uses the Docassemble expert system and document assembly tool. The source code is available on GitHub.

Fair Screening helps tenants who have applied for and been rejected for housing to obtain copies of their tenant screening reports, and amend those reports as needed. At this time, only Illinois residents can use Fair Screening to amend a report. However, residents in all other U.S. states and territories can use the application to obtain copies of their reports.

Why is tenant screening important?

Often, screening reports will include not only negative information, such as evictions and bankruptcies, but court cases that resolved in the tenant's favor. Further, there may be issues on reports such as mistakes, outdated records, or records that are eligible for expungement or sealing. Tenants are often not aware that they are entitled to view their reports and correct problems as needed.
